About Us

Who We Are

Scleroderma Atlantic is committed to enriching the quality of life of those living with scleroderma through support, education, awareness, research, and advocacy.

Our Why

We don’t just support the scleroderma community; we’re part of it. Some of us are patients, while others have witnessed loved ones coping with the challenges of this disease. We share a common ‘why’—a genuine love for this community and an unwavering hope for its future.

Our Journey

1989

The origins of Scleroderma Atlantic began when Mary Beth Clark started hosting scleroderma support groups through the Arthritis Society in 1989.

2000

In 2000, Mary Beth went on to become a founder of Scleroderma Canada.

2010 - 2013

In 2010, Halifax hosted the Scleroderma Canada conference. This conference brought dedicated regional volunteers together who launched the Scleroderma Society of Nova Scotia, which was incorporated in 2013.

2020

In May of 2020, the society undertook a large expansion to form Scleroderma Atlantic. Our society is committed to providing education, advocacy, support, and resources to all of the Atlantic Provinces which include Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador.

2022

In 2022, a part-time employee was hired to streamline operations and strengthen our efforts to support the scleroderma community in Atlantic Canada.

2023

In March 2023, Scleroderma Atlantic earned registered charity status with the Canada Revenue Agency. This milestone allows us to issue tax receipts, accept donations through CanadaHelps, and pursue grants to expand our programs and services across the region.

2024

In August 2024, Scleroderma Atlantic hosted the Scleroderma Canada national conference in St. John’s, NL

Today
