Leave A Legacy
Your Legacy Runs Deep
Support a future where nobody faces scleroderma alone.
Planned giving is a powerful way to ensure your values live on. By including Scleroderma Atlantic in your estate plans, you’re helping to fund research, offer support to patients and families, and raise awareness about scleroderma across Atlantic Canada.
Whether you’re making a future gift through your will or giving today, your generosity leaves a lasting mark.
Strengthen advocacy and awareness in Atlantic Canada
When you choose to leave a planned gift, you create a lasting impact, often without any cost during your lifetime. It’s a meaningful way to:
- Support the David Shea Fund
- Support the Research Fund
- Provide resources and community for patients and families
- Strengthen advocacy and awareness in Atlantic Canada
Ways to Give
Scleroderma Atlantic offers flexible choices that let you make a big difference, no matter your budget, while also helping reduce the tax burden on your estate.
Charitable Bequest
Once you’ve taken care of your loved ones, a gift to Scleroderma Atlantic in your will is an impactful way to leave a lasting memory. There are a few ways in which to do this:
Specific Bequest
A specific bequest is a fixed dollar amount, or a particular asset (stock) left to Scleroderma Atlantic in your will.
Example: “I give the sum of $10,000 to Scleroderma Atlantic, charitable registration number 847608437RR0001, to be used for its general purposes.”
Residual or Remainder Bequest
A residual bequest leaves what’s left of your estate, or a percentage of it, after all other obligations and gifts have been fulfilled. This type of gift often grows in value over time and ensures your loved ones are cared for first.
Example: “I give 25% of the residue of my estate to Scleroderma Atlantic, charitable registration number 847608437RR0001, to support its ongoing programs.”
Designated Gift
A designated gift allows you to direct your bequest toward a specific area of our work, such as patient support, public awareness, or research funding. If you’re considering a designated gift, we encourage you to speak with us to ensure your wishes can be fulfilled as intended.
Example: “I give $5,000 to Scleroderma Atlantic to be used specifically for scleroderma research initiatives.”
Memorial Giving
Individuals can choose to leave a final act of generosity by requesting that donations be made to Scleroderma Atlantic.
Suggested wording: “Per [Name]’s wishes, donations may be made to Scleroderma Atlantic in their memory, to support those affected by scleroderma.”
Registered Funds (RRSP or RRIF)
By donating a portion of the remaining assets in your RRSP or RRIF, you can support a great cause while vastly reducing the tax burden on your estate.
Life Insurance
You can transfer ownership of an existing policy, donate a new policy, or donate the proceeds of your existing policy. If your family is already taken care of, a life insurance gift may work for you. It can be as simple as naming Scleroderma Atlantic as the owner and irrevocable beneficiary of the policy.
Key Steps & Considerations
Consult Professionals
Work with an estate lawyer to draft your will and a financial advisor to structure the gift for maximum benefit.
Use Correct Charity Info
Use the charity’s full legal name (Scleroderma Atlantic Society) and its CRA registration number (847608437RR0001) to avoid delays.
Consider Liquidity
Ensure your estate can cover the gift and other obligations without selling essential assets.
Tax Benefits
Gifts in wills can provide substantial tax credits to your estate, potentially eliminating taxes.
Discuss with Family
Inform your executor and family about your intentions so they understand the gift’s purpose and tax benefits.
